So much to do!

I have so much left to do! I have barely ridden for the last two weeks, just because I’ve been so busy. But things are coming together. The bike feels fantastic. The bags are brilliant (I planned on small bags so that I wouldn’t end up carrying more than I need. I’m sure I will never regret that at all…) and I have some fancy new kit to be riding in. I’m pretty sure that my lights are going to work, and I found someone prepared to insure me. As I write this, I’m sitting in a waiting room to see a doctor and get a certificate to say I am well enough to take part. So things are certainly progressing, and were looking pretty much on track. But then this last weekend threw up some totally unexpected challenges that plunged my timeline into critical territory. As a long-time project manager I did of course build a project plan for this race, and I built a lot of float into it. I am basically now at the end of that float, and there is still a lot left to do.

The bike is great, but still needs some finishing. The bags are brilliant, but I haven’t tried packing them. By the time that the kit arrived I was so focussed on other issues that I’ve barely ridden in it, I’m just hoping it will be sufficiently comfortable (and you better believe the comfort is very important over 4000km!). And as for my route planning – well, I might be resorting to navigating by the stars at this rate!

OK, time to see the Doc, hopefully the next update will be more relaxed!

  1. Hey Rowan, what specs are your batteries and lights and what are your recharge plans/options.
Almost half of your ride time is going to be with these supporting you !!

    1. Hi John Paul, yep, you’re right, these are very important issues! So overnight lighting comes from Supernova gear powered by a SON dynamo. Through the day (or downhill at night!) the SON and attached cache battery will be charging navigation gear as first priority, communication and camera with whatever is left.
